Dental Crown Cost in Sabah 2026: Porcelain vs Zirconia vs PFM Compared
What Does a Dental Crown Cost in Kota Kinabalu?
Dental crowns are one of the most common major dental procedures in Sabah. Whether you need a crown after a root canal, to restore a cracked tooth, or to cover a dental implant, the cost depends heavily on the material you choose. Here's the 2026 breakdown for Kota Kinabalu and surrounding areas.
2026 Crown Prices in Sabah
- Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM): RM 800 – RM 1,500
- All-ceramic / All-porcelain: RM 1,200 – RM 2,000
- Zirconia (monolithic): RM 1,500 – RM 2,800
- Layered zirconia (esthetic): RM 2,000 – RM 3,200
- E-max lithium disilicate: RM 1,800 – RM 3,000
- Full gold crown: RM 2,500 – RM 4,500 (metal cost fluctuates)
- Government clinic: RM 300 – RM 800 (limited materials, long wait)
Which Crown Material Should You Choose?
Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM)
The workhorse of dentistry for 50+ years. A metal substructure with porcelain layered on top. Affordable, strong, and proven. Downside: the metal edge can sometimes show as a dark line at the gumline after years of gum recession.
Best for: Back teeth where strength matters more than aesthetics, patients on a budget.
All-Ceramic / All-Porcelain
Completely metal-free. Excellent aesthetics, natural translucency. Slightly less strong than zirconia but adequate for front teeth.
Best for: Front teeth where appearance is critical.
Monolithic Zirconia
The toughest crown material available. Extremely resistant to chipping and fracture. Modern zirconia is much more aesthetic than the chalky early versions.
Best for: Back molars, patients who grind their teeth (bruxism), anyone who wants the longest-lasting option.
Layered Zirconia
A zirconia core with porcelain layered on the visible surface. Best of both worlds — strong and beautiful. Most expensive option, but worth it for visible teeth where you want durability AND aesthetics.
E-max (Lithium Disilicate)
A premium glass-ceramic material. Stunning aesthetics, good strength, popular for smile makeovers. Slightly less strong than zirconia for heavy biters.
Gold Crowns
Still the gold standard (literally) for longevity. Last 30+ years without wear. Downside: obviously gold-coloured. Rarely used in Malaysia now except for back molars in specific cases.
How Long Do Crowns Last?
- PFM: 10–15 years on average
- All-ceramic: 10–15 years
- Zirconia: 15–25+ years
- E-max: 10–15 years
- Gold: 30+ years
Lifespan depends hugely on oral hygiene, bite forces, and whether you grind your teeth at night.
What's Included in a Crown Quote?
A complete crown procedure in Sabah should include:
- Consultation and X-ray
- Tooth preparation (shaping)
- Impression (traditional or digital scan)
- Temporary crown
- Laboratory fabrication
- Cementation of the final crown
- Bite adjustment
- Follow-up review
Beware of quotes that look unusually cheap — they often exclude the lab fee, impression, or temporary crown.
Digital vs Traditional Impressions
Modern clinics use intraoral scanners (Trios, iTero, Medit) to take digital impressions — no messy putty. The data is sent digitally to the lab. Benefits:
- More comfortable (no gagging)
- More accurate fit
- Faster turnaround
- Patient can see the scan immediately
Not all clinics in KK have these yet. Ask before booking.
Same-Day Crowns (CEREC)
Some high-end clinics offer CEREC same-day crowns — they mill the crown in-office in about an hour. You walk in with a broken tooth and leave with a permanent crown. Cost is typically 20–30% higher than traditional crowns but saves you a second visit and weeks of waiting.
Does Insurance Cover Crowns?
Many Malaysian dental insurance plans cover crowns under "major restorative" benefits, but with limits:
- Annual major restorative cap (typically RM 1,500 – RM 5,000)
- 50–80% coverage of the crown cost (you pay the rest)
- Pre-authorisation often required
- Cosmetic crowns usually excluded
Check your policy before treatment. AIA, Allianz, Great Eastern, Prudential, and Etiqa typically cover crowns on a pro-rata basis.
How to Avoid Unnecessary Crowns
Not every cracked or large filling needs a crown. Some alternatives:
- Inlay/onlay: Partial coverage restoration, preserves more tooth
- Large composite filling: Cheaper but less durable
- Amalgam filling (silver): Old-school but lasts decades
A good dentist will discuss alternatives rather than defaulting to the most expensive option.
