Scaling & Polishing
Keep your teeth and gums healthy with professional scaling and polishing at our Kota Kinabalu clinic. Dr. Pavendeep Singh recommends regular cleaning to prevent gum disease, cavities, and bad breath.
What is Scaling and Polishing?
Scaling and polishing is a professional dental cleaning that removes plaque and tartar (calculus) that regular brushing cannot. Even with excellent home care, some buildup occurs in hard-to-reach areas, making professional cleaning essential for oral health.
Why is Professional Cleaning Important?
Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth daily. When not removed, it hardens into tartar within 24-72 hours. Tartar cannot be removed by brushing alone and harbours bacteria that cause:
- Gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis)
- Tooth decay and cavities
- Bad breath (halitosis)
- Tooth loss in severe cases
The Scaling Process
Scaling involves using specialised instruments to remove tartar deposits from tooth surfaces, including below the gum line. We use both hand scalers and ultrasonic devices for thorough cleaning.
The ultrasonic scaler uses gentle vibrations and water spray to efficiently break up tartar while being comfortable for patients.
The Polishing Process
After scaling, we polish your teeth using a soft rubber cup and special paste. This removes surface stains and leaves your teeth feeling smooth and clean. Smooth tooth surfaces make it harder for plaque to accumulate.
How Often Should You Get Scaling?
We recommend professional cleaning every 6 months for most patients. If you have gum disease or are prone to heavy tartar buildup, more frequent visits (every 3-4 months) may be advised.

Find answers to common questions about this treatment.
Is scaling painful?
Scaling is generally not painful. You may feel some pressure and vibration from the ultrasonic scaler. If you have sensitive gums or heavy tartar buildup, we can use a numbing gel to ensure your comfort.
How much does teeth cleaning cost in Kota Kinabalu?
Standard scaling and polishing typically costs RM80-150. Deep cleaning for patients with gum disease may cost more depending on the extent of treatment needed.
Does scaling damage tooth enamel?
No, professional scaling does not damage enamel. The instruments used are designed to remove tartar without harming the underlying tooth structure. In fact, leaving tartar in place is more damaging to your teeth and gums.
Why are my gums bleeding after scaling?
Minor bleeding indicates gum inflammation (gingivitis). Healthy gums don't bleed easily. After scaling and with improved home care, your gums should become healthier and stop bleeding within 1-2 weeks.
How long does scaling and polishing take?
A routine cleaning takes about 30-45 minutes. If you have significant tartar buildup or haven't had cleaning in a while, it may take longer or require multiple visits.
