Dentures in Sabah 2026: Cost, Types, and What to Expect
Do You Need Dentures?
If you've lost multiple teeth, dentures may restore your ability to chew, speak, and smile confidently. In Sabah, dentures remain one of the most common options for tooth replacement — especially for older adults — because they're the most affordable full solution. This 2026 guide explains the options available in Kota Kinabalu.
Types of Dentures Explained
1. Full Conventional Dentures
Complete upper or lower dentures that replace ALL teeth in that arch. Made from acrylic with pink gum-coloured base and porcelain or acrylic teeth. Removable daily for cleaning.
Cost: RM 1,000 – RM 4,500 per arch (upper or lower). For both: RM 2,000 – RM 8,500.
2. Partial Dentures
Replace some missing teeth while using the remaining natural teeth for support. Two main types:
- Acrylic partial: RM 500 – RM 1,500 — cheaper, bulkier, temporary solution
- Metal (cobalt-chrome) partial: RM 1,200 – RM 2,800 — thinner, stronger, better long-term
- Flexible (Valplast) partial: RM 1,500 – RM 3,500 — comfortable, no metal clasps, good aesthetics
3. Immediate Dentures
Made in advance and fitted immediately after tooth extraction so you're never without teeth. Cost: RM 1,500 – RM 3,500. Requires relining or replacement after 6 months as the gums heal and shrink.
4. Implant-Supported Overdentures
Removable dentures that snap onto 2–4 dental implants for much better stability. The gold standard for denture wearers who can afford it.
- 2-implant lower overdenture: RM 8,000 – RM 12,000
- 4-implant upper overdenture: RM 12,000 – RM 18,000
- All-on-4 full arch (fixed): RM 25,000 – RM 50,000 per arch
5. Temporary Flipper
A single-tooth removable plastic replacement, usually used temporarily while waiting for a permanent solution like a bridge or implant.
Cost: RM 300 – RM 800.

How Long Do Dentures Last?
- Conventional dentures: 5–10 years (need relining every 2–3 years)
- Metal-based partials: 10–15 years with good care
- Implant-supported: 15+ years for the implants; attachments/dentures may need replacement periodically
Dentures wear down, your gums change shape over time, and the fit becomes looser. Regular check-ups catch issues early.
The Denture Process: What to Expect
- Consultation and examination (1 visit): Dentist assesses remaining teeth, gums, and bone. Takes X-rays.
- Impressions (1–2 visits): Custom trays and detailed impressions to fit your mouth exactly.
- Bite registration: Determines how your upper and lower jaws meet.
- Try-in: Wax version of the dentures tested for fit, colour, and appearance before finalising.
- Delivery and fitting: The final dentures are delivered. Adjustments are made for comfort.
- Follow-up visits: Usually 2–4 follow-up appointments to adjust sore spots as you adapt.
Total time from start to finish: 3–6 weeks typically.
Adapting to New Dentures
Wearing dentures for the first time requires adjustment. What to expect:
- Week 1–2: Feeling bulky, extra saliva, some soreness, speech takes practice
- Week 3–4: Getting used to eating. Start with soft foods, cut into small pieces.
- Month 2–3: Most people are comfortable. Some foods still challenging (corn on the cob, tough meat).
- Month 3+: Dentures feel natural
Be patient. Almost everyone struggles at first.
Caring for Your Dentures
- Remove and clean after every meal
- Brush with a soft denture brush (not regular toothpaste — too abrasive)
- Soak overnight in a denture cleaning solution (Polident, Steradent) or plain water
- NEVER soak in hot water (causes warping)
- Rinse before placing back in your mouth
- Brush your gums and tongue twice daily even without teeth
- See your dentist at least once a year for checks and adjustments
Common Problems and Solutions
"My dentures keep slipping"
Usually caused by ill-fitting dentures or inadequate suction. Solutions:
- Get them relined (dentist adds material to improve fit) — RM 200 – RM 600
- Denture adhesive (Fixodent, Polident) — temporary help
- Consider implant-supported overdentures — the definitive solution
"I can't eat properly"
Normal initially. If it persists, your bite may need adjustment. Don't struggle for months — return to your dentist.
"They make me gag"
Upper dentures covering the palate can trigger gagging in some patients. A palateless (horseshoe-shaped) upper denture may help. Implant-supported versions avoid covering the palate entirely.
"Sore spots on my gums"
Normal in the first weeks. Return to the dentist for quick adjustments. Do NOT stop wearing them — the gums need to adapt.
Is the Expense of Implant Dentures Worth It?
For most patients, yes — if you can afford it. Implant-supported dentures:
- Don't slip or fall out
- Let you eat normally (even corn on the cob)
- Prevent the jawbone from shrinking
- Look and feel more natural
- Last much longer
The upfront cost is higher, but the improvement in quality of life is significant.
