Scaling & Polishing in Kota Kinabalu: Why You Need It Every 6 Months

作者 Admin• 5 min

What Is Scaling and Polishing?

Scaling and polishing — sometimes called a "prophy" or professional dental cleaning — is the most common preventive dental procedure. During the procedure, a dentist or dental hygienist:

  1. Removes plaque and tartar (calculus) from above and below the gum line using an ultrasonic scaler
  2. Polishes the teeth with a fine paste to remove surface stains
  3. Sometimes applies fluoride for added protection
  4. Checks for early signs of decay or gum disease

You cannot remove tartar at home with brushing. Once plaque hardens into tartar (usually within 24–72 hours), only professional tools can remove it.

2026 Scaling & Polishing Prices in Sabah

  • Government clinic (Klinik Pergigian Kerajaan): RM 10 – RM 40
  • Basic private scaling: RM 80 – RM 150
  • Full ultrasonic scaling + polishing: RM 120 – RM 200
  • Deep cleaning (for gum disease): RM 200 – RM 600 per quadrant
  • Full mouth deep cleaning: RM 800 – RM 2,000

Why Every 6 Months?

Plaque constantly forms on your teeth. Even with excellent brushing and flossing, some areas are hard to reach. Over 6 months, enough plaque hardens into tartar to start damaging your gums if not removed. Regular scaling:

  • Prevents gingivitis (early gum inflammation)
  • Prevents periodontitis (advanced gum disease that causes tooth loss)
  • Removes stains from coffee, teh tarik, smoking, curry
  • Allows the dentist to catch cavities early
  • Reduces bad breath
  • Is linked to lower risk of heart disease and stroke (gum disease is a cardiovascular risk factor)

For patients with a history of gum disease, scaling every 3–4 months may be recommended.

Is Scaling Painful?

For most people, no — just a bit uncomfortable. You'll feel vibrations and a cool water spray from the ultrasonic scaler. Some sensitivity is normal, especially if you have receding gums or haven't been for a cleaning in years.

If you have significant tartar buildup or inflamed gums, the procedure can be moderately uncomfortable. Tell your dentist — they can use topical numbing gel or local anaesthetic if needed.

What Happens During the Appointment

  1. Oral examination: Dentist checks your teeth and gums (5 minutes)
  2. Ultrasonic scaling: Removes tartar above and below gum line (15–25 minutes)
  3. Hand scaling: Fine scraping with hand instruments for precision (5–10 minutes)
  4. Polishing: Rotating rubber cup with polishing paste (5 minutes)
  5. Flossing: Removes any remaining debris
  6. Fluoride application: Optional, helps strengthen enamel
  7. Review: Discussion of oral hygiene, next appointment

Total time: 30–45 minutes for a routine cleaning. Longer if there's significant tartar.

After Your Cleaning

  • Mild gum soreness: Normal for 1–2 days. Saltwater rinses help.
  • Sensitivity to hot/cold: Normal especially if significant tartar was removed. Use Sensodyne.
  • Bleeding when brushing: May increase briefly, then decrease as gums heal.
  • Food gets stuck between teeth: Spaces that were plugged with tartar are now open. This is actually healthy — floss those areas daily.

Does Insurance Cover Scaling?

Yes — scaling and polishing is one of the most commonly covered dental benefits in Malaysia. Most plans include 1–2 scalings per year:

  • AIA, Allianz, Great Eastern, Prudential, Etiqa: all typically cover 2 scalings/year
  • Coverage is usually direct billing at panel clinics
  • Often the only dental benefit that requires zero paperwork

Use your insurance! If you don't, you're leaving money on the table.

What If You Haven't Been in Years?

If your last cleaning was 5+ years ago, a single appointment may not be enough. Common scenario:

  1. First visit: Initial assessment, partial scaling of heaviest areas, oral hygiene instructions
  2. 2–4 weeks later: Full scaling (your gums have had time to reduce inflammation)
  3. 6 weeks later: Review and possible additional scaling
  4. Every 3–4 months for the first year
  5. Every 6 months once stable

Don't feel embarrassed about long gaps — dentists are there to help, not judge. The important thing is getting back on track.

Home Care Between Appointments

  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste (2 minutes each time)
  • Floss daily or use interdental brushes
  • Mouthwash (chlorhexidine short-term if recommended; fluoride mouthwash long-term)
  • Water flosser for people with braces, implants, or hard-to-reach areas
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3 months
  • Limit sugary drinks and between-meal snacks
  • Stay hydrated — dry mouth accelerates plaque buildup
